Martin Luther
King Jr. (born Michael King Jr.; Atlanta, January 15, 1929 - Memphis, April
4, 1968) was an American Baptist pastor and political activist who became the most prominent figure
and leader of the civil rights movement in the United
States from 1955 until his assassination in 1968. King is widely known
for the struggle for political rights through nonviolence and civil disobedience, inspired by his Christian beliefs and Mahatma
Gandhi's
In 1955 King led the boycott of Montgoery buses and later became the first president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (abbreviated in English as SCLC). As president of SCLC, he led unsuccessfully in 1962 the fight against segregation in Albany, and was one of the participants who organized the 1963 non violent protests in Birmingham. King helped organize the March on Washington where he delivered his famous "I Have a Dream" speech (in English: "I Have a Dream") at the foot of the Lincoln Memorial.
On October 14, 1964, King won the Nobel Peace Prize for fighting racism in the United States through non-violent resistance. In 1965, he helped organize the Selma Marches to Montgomery. In his later years, he expanded his activism against poverty and the Vietnam War. FBI director J. Edgar Hoover thought King was a radical and made him a target of the counterintelligence program from 1963 onwards. FBI agents investigated him for possible communist ties, threatened to make his alleged extramarital relations public and reported him to government officials and , in 1964, King was sent an anonymous threatening letter, which he interpreted as an attempt by someone to encourage him to commit suicide
Before his death, King was planning an occupation in Washington, D.C., which would be called the Campaign for the Poor, when he was murdered on April 4, 1968 in Memphis. His death caused a strong reaction and was followed by demonstrations in several cities in the United States. Claims that King's staunch killer, James Earl Ray, were coerced or acted with government agents persisted for decades after the shooting.
King was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal. Martin Luther King Day was established as aholiday in cities and states in the United States from 1971; the holiday was enacted at the federal level by legislation signed by President Ronald Reagan in 1986. Hundreds of roads in the US have been renamed in his honor, and a county in Washington has been dedicated to him. The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial at the National Mall in Washington D.C. was opened in his honor in 2011.
